Sow, wait, harvest: Noah's field comes to life

Before the ark there was bread. Noah now has his own wheat field, from seed to sickle.

Before the ark there was bread. This week we gave Noah his own wheat field, and with it a new rhythm for days in the village.

Sowing by hand

Noah walks between the furrows and scatters seed from an open fist, the way fields were sown in the ancient Near East. You can watch every handful fly and land on the soil. We wanted it to be a calm gesture, the kind you enjoy repeating.

Time does its part

While you get on with other tasks, the field turns from ploughed earth to green shoots and then to golden ears. There is no timer and no rush: when you come back, the wheat is waiting for you.

“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

— Genesis 8:22 (KJV)

Sickle and storehouse

With the sickle you reap the ears and gather hay. What you harvest goes into your satchel and comes back later, when the family and the animals inside the ark need to be fed. A small job today that pays off much later in the story.
